2007 in Chester County Pennsylvania
Known to many as "Hyski", he was a legendery Philadelphia disc jockey
and one of the pioneers of rock & roll radio. His career began in the
1950's and he worked on most of the popular radio stations in
Philadelphia during his 50 plus years on the air, most notably on WIBG,
WDAS and WODL. He was also the emcee for many shows in the Philadelphia
area including shows by Elvis Presley, The Beach Boys, The Beatles and
The Rolling Stones. In the 1960's he hosted a dance party style show
called Block Party on Philadelphia television station WCAU Channel 10
and also did a "Rate The Records" show on WNTA Channel 13 in New York.
He later had shows called "Hyski A-Go-Go" and "The Hy Lit Show" which
ran for seven years on WKBS Channel 48 in Philadelphia. The show was
also syndicated into other television markets across the country
including WKBG Boston, KBHK San Francisco, WKBF Cleveland, and WKBD
Detroit. He continued as one of Philadelphia's most popular radio
personalities after his television show was cancelled in the early
1970's. He spent 16 years with oldies radio station WOGL despite being
diagnosed with Parkinson's Disease but resigned from the station in 2005
as part of the settlement of an age discrimination lawsuit. Along with
his son, he launched his own website and oldies radio show which was
broadcast over the internet. He was inducted into the Broadcast Pioneers
of Philadelphia Hall of Fame in 2003. |
